In 2004 I spent 8 months learning how to construct 3D maps using Valve’s Hammer World Editor for the extremely popular video game Counter Strike. At the time, there weren’t many maps that allowed the use of night vision goggles. Because of this, I built cs_spetsnaz, which was a hostage rescue map set in Russia at night. Hostages were being held by inside a warehouse and it allowed the counter terrorism team to disengage the interior lighting for breaching with night vision if they so chose. The map was featured on FilePlanet’s Official Counter Strike Source Map Pack and subsequently had been downloaded more than 50,000 times.
Here is a review of the map from Gamebanana, one of the largest CounterStrike map sites:
“The map itself is well made, the time setting and atmostphere is great. The texture selection for the interior and exterior of the warehouse is excellent. The exterior has that degraded, old look to it while the inside is clean and new, just what you would expect from a criminal organization’s safehouse.”
